lots of sewing, some dreaming about sowing

maggie b needed a spot to store a toy and a book or two
in her tiny brooklyn kitchen.
i popped this in the mail.

today i was remembering the warm summer breezes in august 2016,
when i harvested my indigo and dyed some linen.
i stitched up these lavender sachets today, to gift to my friend terry.
i had my first professional massage with her a few weeks ago.
*sigh*

this wallhanging went out to tuscon, az.
it's a very belated wedding gift for two courageous
young educators.
their partnership is grounded in peace and justice work.
wow.

this past weekend batman and i ordered our veggie seeds from

in the midst of daily life, with its chores, routines, work and barrage of news
it's just a delight to have the sanctuary of my sewing studio and dreams of
the upcoming growing season.

sew and sow.

how are you navigating the last bit of february, dear friends?

thinking of you today

searching for a prescription to take the sting out of yesterday's news, i find myself struggling today.
i wonder if you may be you struggling too.
dearest ones, this morning i sat with mary oliver, and her lovely poem "when i am among the trees".
(you can find the text here.)
i pulled on my boots and waded through the melting snow and hiked among the balsams.
i threw my head back and looked up at the sky.
i ran the branches through my hands and inhaled their clean, fresh scent.
i may have hugged a birch or two.
i took deep, cleansing breaths full of chilly vermont air.

i thought of all the educators i know and love.
four of them are my very own children.
some of them are their friends and some of them are my own friends.
they are devoted and courageous people.

tangled up in politics, policies, inertia, exasperation, shame and "thoughts and prayers" is one truth i know.
each morning that we awaken is a gift, a gift we cannot squander.

i invite all of us to raise our voices...
demand accountability from our representatives.
challenge the nra.
advocate for our local schools.
support our local mental health programs.

"you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine.” -mary oliver

in the face of all that is going on in our world, to be filled with light and to shine is nothing short of revolutionary.

be the light, friends.

tula tuesday::week 6

another tula tuesday block, inspired by lizi boyd's fun
children's book, I Wrote You a Note.

(lizi's illustration on the left, my interpretation on the right).

from tula pink's City Sampler, block #28.

here's a peek at how the four lizi-inspired blocks look together.
do you smell what i'm cookin'?

Three other fun quilting related items...

1.)  Those portraits of Michelle and Barack Obama that were unveiled yesterday?  Gorgeous! If the dress that Michelle was painted in has awoken a little twinge of deja vu in you, listen to this brief interview with the artist, Amy Sherald, on NPR yesterday.

2.)  Did you know that Ken Burns is a quilt enthusiast? My friend Ellen sent me this link from the New York Times a while back. Fascinating.

3.)  Do any of you follow Rita over at Red Pepper Quilts? She is a wonderful quilter and has recently posted pictures she took while at the Tokyo Quilt Festival. The beauty of the quilts is simply jaw dropping. Check out this link to her blog. It's worth the time, I promise.

triptych #43

We've been to Brooklyn and back. Such lovely family time with Maggie B, her mama and papa, her Auntie Lindsey and a delightful surprise meet up with a very dear friend from our Old San Juan days.
Still soaking in all the love.

But there is no place like home.

-windowsill flowers from last week.
-late afternoon sunshine, creating dala horse shadows.
-snow flurries this morning.
