it's been a cold sunday

m. heart's beautiful post  reminded me that
one of our amaryllis is looking really gorgeous too.
(m. heart's blog is wonderful).
inspired by pete, and our daughter, gretta, too, we've been
thinking a lot about the politics of food.
i have been reading this book,
and we've been doing some online research about
growing hops (they are exquisite plants).
henry has been snuggled by the fire most of the weekend.
(last evening, it felt like he was giving us the cold shoulder.)
batman and i have spent some exasperating time with a variety of
technologies this afternoon and we are fed up.
so...i went into the kitchen...
did you know that today is national pie day?
i baked a granny smith apple pie this afternoon.

and there's more snow in the forecast this week!
what's it like in your neighborhood?

  1. Thank you Karen, that pie is absolutely amazing looking!

Storey has a great book (called The Homebrewer's Garden I believe) about growing hops in addition to other beer-related crops. I've often thought of growing them myself, if for nothing else but the gorgeous plants. Apparently someone has just purchased a large farm in Greenfield, MA and is planning to start a hops farm there...very local!

  3. It's pretty cold here in Chicago too and, like Henry, we've spent a good deal of the weekend by the fire. After the disappointing loss of our hometown team today, I could sure go for a slice of that pie. Looks so yummy!

  4. I missed National Pie Day?!!! Then I'm going to have to bake one in honor of yet another snow storm and liking school cancellation later this week.

  6. I'm workin' to clear the driveway of ice for bookclub's arrival tonight. A neighbor of mine started growing hops last year - happy to connect you if you've got questions!
