harvesting balsam seeds

the cones are waiting at the very top of the trees.
a long handled clipper and
a ladder is involved.
and i am not on it.
here are the seeds, scrunched from the cones.
drying on the three season porch up in vt.
heading to the freezer for the winter.
they will be ready for the sprouting bed in the spring.

do you do any seed saving?

bread and puppet!!!

we drove up and over the mountains to the amphitheatre at the big town gallery in rochester. here's the bread and puppet bus and orchestra pit.
the backdrop.
wall streeters on stilts...and the collapse of the economy.
a quiet moment.
karl marx returns from the dead to remind us that "money is the invisible diety".

evidence

of fall's progress...

left the windows open last night and woke up this morning at "a bit of earth" with a chill in the air...52 degrees.

asters and goldenrod in lovely drifts in the meadow.

heavy, red/orange clusters of berries on the mountain ash at the front porch.

drifting mist as i drove early along interstate 89 to montpelier to do food shopping at hunger mountain food co-op.

huge, handsome stacks of firewood at everyone's back door or woodshed.

swapping chrysanthemums for tired impatiens in the tub out by the road.

wool on the needles again. shorn, carded and spun from the sheep at camp. purchased at the fair in august.

happy long weekend, blogland friends!

please send good thoughts to our friend judy, who has been re-hospitalized.
