AEDM:day fourteen

"snug and content"
the home comfort, a comfy chair and knitting.
i've turned the heel on a pair of socks for the first time ever,
and what a simple thrill it was.

Batman was in Brazil on business last week, and after a "choppy landing" at JFK (thanks to the left over winds from tropical storm Ida), we decided to head to our "bit of earth" in Vermont.

This morning we were awakened by gunshots...today is the first day of deer hunting season. This is a part of rural life I still struggle with.  Lots of pick up trucks parked along the road, and so I pulled out our stack of fluorescent orange fleece scarves and set it by the front door. Never leave home without one at this time of year, even if you're just walking to the garage!
The neighborhood is damp, chilly and grey...but oh, so beautiful...rust, bracken, golden...the foliage is gone, but the beauty of "stick season" has bloomed.

  2. I have lots of catching up to do in reading your blog, and my poor site has grown cobwebs! I love the autumnal colors in your comfy quilt and the landscape. I feel very conflicted about hunting. Mostly i hate it. I can understand the Native American approach with reverence towards the animal who sacrifices itself so that the people can live, and every last scrap of the animal is used in some way; but i cannot understand someone who thinks it's manly to drink a lot of beers, shoot a deer poorly, let it wander through the woods bleeding to death, and be too lazy/lousy a hunter to finish the deer off. Or to only want a buck to mount its head on the wall.

  3. Your posts like this one are so comfy cosy, Karen.
The idea of hunters being in the vicinity of your home seems pretty scary to me, though. Guns - ugh! And hunting (for sport) - WHY??

  4. Knitting sounds like the perfect response to deer season (as in: inside activity!) We spent our 1st Thanksgiving at our island spot, but have chosen not to go back during deer season again. Hunting is not for me, but as long as I eat my occasional red meat I'm at peace with the idea. I find most of the hunters on our island to be more responsible than most factory meat operations I've read about. The ultimate in localvore fare.

  5. yes, yes, yes, the hunting is very disconcerting. but i know that some of our neighbors truly do rely on venison to get them through the winter. those who do it for sport...i wish they would try something else.

  6. Beautiful. I noticed you are CT and VT, I am right in the Middle in MA. On the hunting, Humans have removed a lot of the deer's natural preditors from the area. Providing for a family is far better than wrecking a car or slow starvation.

  7. I love your quilt and your view. Congratulations on your sock success. I recently bought some sock wool, but I've yet to pluck up the courage to have a go :-)
